I’m so sorry it has been such a long time since I posted. I’ve been hard at work on my final two quilts for the show – a full/queen sized Christmas Log Cabin and an Autumn’s End throw.
As I’m working on my Christmas Log Cabin Quilt it occurs to me that putting a quilt together is like unwrapping a gift with about 8 layers of wrapping paper on it. But instead of just tearing into it you must go slowly; careful not to rip the paper. As you unfold one layer after another you get peak after peak of images telling you what this present is going to be.
You start with scraps of fabric like this….
And then you cut it and put it together to make this….
There is something so amazing about assembling a quilt. The cutting is tedious because you have to so exact with the measurements and I’ve never been a fan of ironing, but sewing it together and seeing a picture emerge? Fabulous.
I have always loved creating art. I have painted, made collages, beaded, and even done a smidge of sculpting. Quilting is something that appeals to my creative side and also adheres to William Morris’s requirement that beautiful things in the house be practical and useful as well.
The graduating colors really give it the holly wreath look that I was hoping for. The backing for this quilt is flannel. That makes it very heavy and quite, quite warm – perfect for a winter bed. I’m almost tempted to keep it for myself. Almost. I can always make myself another.
