Books for a Blizzard

The DC Area is supposed to get anywhere from 3- to 24-inches of snow on Sunday. The city inches along at even a half-inch of snow. If we get 2 feet of snow the city is shutting down for at least three days. And we’re likely to lose power for bit, so no internet and no TV.

But never fear! I am here with six books that will suck you in and make all that time surrounded by snow fly by.

Wooing the Witch Queen, by Stephanie Burgis

Such a fun romp! Mild romance with witty writing, this is the tale of a powerful witch who reluctantly falls in love with a mysterious evil wizard she’s hired to organize her uncle’s library.

Except, he isn’t a wizard. He’s a prince on the run from his evil steward well on his way to taking over the continent. He’s also falling for her, but will she turn him into dust once she finds out he’s the prince of the most hated realm in the land?

Assassins Anonymous, by Rob Hart

One of my favorite books in the last three years. AND THERE’S A SEQUEL. The writing is smart and funny, and the premise is unbeatable. Who doesn’t want to read about the world’s deadliest assassin who’s taken a vow to never kill again, and then is suddenly being hunted down by an old nemesis who wants to settle a score? Will he have to kill to survive? Or will he sacrifice himself to keep his promise?

Legends and Lattes, by Travis Baldree

Val is an orc mercenary who is finding her “second act” in life bringing the magic of coffee to a small town. She opens the town’s very first coffee shop as she also navigates new friendships and old habits.

This book is a hot cup of tea and a plate of biscuits. Wrap yourself up in a blanket and you have a perfect way to spend an afternoon snowed in. (And there’s Book 2 and Book 3!)

Jackal, by Erin E. Adams

An amazing debut novel that was nominated for an Edgar (among a fist-full of other awards) and called one of the best horror novels of all time. Erin hits on themes of being an outsider (or “an only”) in a place that should’ve been home, being black in white spaces, and evil that lurks in the deep, dark woods. The writing sizzles and propels you through the book. I was shocked to find I was halfway through it already.

Atmosphere, by Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you liked Daisy Jones and the Six, you will love Atmosphere. Set in the 1980s space race, we follow some of the first women astronauts as they enter NASA, alternating with scenes set in the future of these same astronauts in deep trouble during the mission they were training for. Action, adventure, danger, romance, true love, and space. It’s truly spectacular.

She’s a Lamb, by Meredith Hambrock

I read this book last year and I still can’t get it out of my head. A woman who’s passed over for the coveted lead in her community theater’s production of The Sound of Music, plots ways to prove she’s really the better choice. Initially quirky and humorous, the tone darkens as her more disturbing and troubled thoughts are revealed. You’ll be talking about this one for months.
