As many of you know, I interview authors for The Big Thrill. I usually do about one interview a month, which is plenty for me. Because I’m also part of a book club and then there’s my addiction to buying books. (“Hey kids! You want to go to the bookstore?” “Mom, we’re not allowed to enable you anymore.”)
But this is what I’ve read since January 1st.

Well, most of it anyway. There are books I’ve lent to people and a few that my spouse and children have absconded with, but this is about … 90% of them.
I thought I’d share a five of my favorites.
Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun, by Elle Cosimano
Fun and funny, Finlay Donovan is a single mom, romantic suspense author, and accidental hitwoman. The relationships between the characters is compelling and the mystery keeps you turning the pages. A five-star beach read that needs to be in your pool bag this summer. (And if you haven’t heard of this series, start here!)
The Librarian of Burned Books, by Brianna Labuskes
I know I mentioned this one in a previous newsletter, but I can’t stop thinking about it. With thought-provoking themes of censorship and the banning of books, this historical novel is frighteningly current. Brianna weaves together three different narratives into one tale about love, survival, and fighting for what’s right.
The Ninja Daughter, by Tori Eldridge
Another book for your beach bag! Lily Wong is a delightful heroine. The action scenes have a hint of John Wick to them (which I LOVED) and there’s enough humor and warm emotions keep this 3-dimensional. This is a five-star original. And you’re in luck, because Tori has two more books in this series available to buy.
The Guilty One, by Bill Schweigart
This was pitched to me as a police procedural, but what sold me was the Jack the Ripper elements woven into the modern setting. The writing is super smart and the action propelled me through the book. I loved the characters and I put it down only grudgingly. I’m sincerely hoping this is the start of a series.
The Love Hypothesis, by Ali Hazelwood
It’s no secret that I love a good romance novel. This one happens to be a great romance novel. It’s a Grumpy meets Sunshine story full of witty dialogue and characters you cheer for. Even the secondary characters shine, which isn’t always the case. This is a perfect novel to add to your beach bag.
I want to see what you’re reading! Snap a photo of your latest or favorite read from the first half of the year and tag me in it on my Instagram page. @mindycarlsonauthor
